I have 10.4 OS and need to convert my email account to iCloud. I was given a workaround from Apple but they are not permitted to walk me through it. When I went to the workaround, I was told to: go to Mail>Preferences> Accounts and select MobileMe account. But I did not see this displayed? Is there another way?

You should be able to get your mail by manually entering the settings on this page:

Thanks for your fast response, but don't I need an iCloud account to be able to do this, e.g., it asks for an iCloud password? Where can I access these settings?

Many thanks - rtt

If you haven't already, you'll need to setup an iCloud account. Follow the instructions here. Given that you're using Tiger (10.4), you'll need an iOS device or another computer to do this.

Thanks for your help. Apologies for what are no doubt dumb questions, but how can I set up an iCloud account for my Tiger 10.4 Mac from my PC. My daughter has an ipod touch. Can this be used to help me set up the account?

Many thank - rtt

The instructions I provided in my last link will show you how to setup an iCloud account. If your daughter's iPod Touch has iOS 5, you could use that. If not, the Windows machine should work.

Any particular reason you want iCloud? I only ask since, because you'll have to configure it manually, it's little different than other similar services.

Thanks again. No particular reason on converting to iCloud. I've been getting notes from Apple saying that mobileme will close at the end of June and that I should convert. All I really want to be able to do at this stage is retain my email address. My seven year-old Mac (with original battery!) is still going strong so I saw no reason to shell out the cash for a new Mac.

No problem. Take a look at this MobileMe to iCloud transition page if you haven't already.

That's a helpful link - thanks. Had a quick look and it seems I need to buy a reference release from the Mac store. How can I tell if I have Lion, Tiger, etc, ?

You have Tiger. Tiger is 10.4, Leopard is 10.5, Snow Leopard is 10.6 and Lion is 10.7.

If you use the manual settings provided by technologist earlier, you shouldn't need to upgrade.

One last question (hopefully). Do I need to first open an iCloud account before I can change the settings from the Technologist note? I ask this because one of the inputs is for my iCloud password. Sorry I'm confused on all this, but it seems to me a bit chicken or egg...

Thanks again - rtt
