Hi guys,
I am having a problem where my external isn't registering when I plug it in to back up via Time Machine. I've tried powering down, using both USB ports and buying a new firewire in case that was faulty. I recently switched from Tiger to Leopard, but I think the problem may have existed before the upgrade. I wonder if I need to reformat the hard drive? It doesn't register in finder, Time Machine, system utilities etc. Any help would be sooooo appreciated. Thanks!

Sometimes the interface for the drive fails but the drive itself is OK. What I mean by that is the enclosure the drive is encased in - that contains the interface, USB, Firewire. If Disk Utility is not showing the drive, reformatting may be a waste of time.

If the drive is still under warranty, don't mess with it. Get a RMA from the manufacturer and let them replace it. If it's not still under warranty, you might try removing the drive from the enclosure and put it in a new one. You can buy enclosures both USB and Firewire from most stores which sell computers and accessories.
