I installed the recent update for Java to protect against the recently discovered malware outbreak. After installing the update, I noticed the instructions said to disable Safari or any other open web browser before installation. I didn't do this, but it seemed to install OK. Did it, in fact, install successfully? I didn't get an error message of any kind.

Should I consider installing antivirus software on my MacBook Pro, such as Sophos, because of this??

thanks, Kevin

I forgot to close Chrome while downloading the Java update. It showed up again in software updates - this time I made sure to close Chrome down. I don't know if it installs or not if the browser is open but it appears that maybe it didn't. I would run software update again to make sure you have the Java update installed. It can't harm anything by doing so.

I think they ask you to close the browser down because otherwise, the old copy remains in use (it's still loaded in memory). Thus, getting you to close the browser ensures that you're using the new version since it will then be loaded. Now, that's a theory since I don't actually know how loaded applications are managed in OS X.

Oddly enough, mine updated with FF open.

mikeMBP:scripts mike$ java -version
java version "1.6.0_31"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_31-b04-414-11M3626)
Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 20.6-b01-414, mixed mode)
mikeMBP:scripts mike$

I don't think I'd loaded anything using Java though.

I agree with Van. It's just so the updated Java, Flash, ETC will be loaded when you re-open Safari. I usually close it for that reason. Flash will close it for you if you don't!

Looks like my theory has been lent some credence.

At least it warns you. I ran OnyX the other day and I'm pretty sure it closed a Finder window without warning me.
