I just purchased a new MBP 17 and upgraded the HD and RAM.
I head to the box the laptop came in and there is a user manual, cloth but no installation media. I wanted to install OSX on the new SSD, but now I'm screwed. My last MBP had installation and application media. Is this normal for new laptops now? Am I going to fight an uphill battle going to the store and telling them the OS and application disks are missing? |

New Mac's don't come with disks anymore. They come with a recovery partition built in to the hard drive.
If you want to install Lion onto another HDD, you're gonna have to download Lion Recovery Disk Assistant - Lion Recovery Disk Assistant v1.0 Once you've created a "Copy" of Lion on a thumb drive, you'll be able to install Lion on your new HDD. You could also use something called Carbon Copy Cloner - It basically creates a bootable mirror of your HDD, but I've never tested it but I believe a few members here use it as a bootable back up. You may want to check that out. Hope that helps. Play the guitar?! Check out the [newly created]Mac-Forums guitar thread! |

![]() I used a USB thumb drive and Lion Recovery Disk Assistant to boot the system. I partitioned the volume and ran the Lion installation. It must be installing Lion from the internet because the OS is not on the thumb drive and I see internet activity from the laptop

Yeah. The same would happen if you were to do a fresh install on your original HDD. You need to be connected to the net to do a fresh install of Lion, I believe.
Still, glad you're on the right path! Play the guitar?! Check out the [newly created]Mac-Forums guitar thread! |
