I use iMovie a lot recently, I will be upgrading to either Final cut of Adobe Premier soon so hopefully this issue won't apply to me much longer.
So when I create an event in iMovie 11, I on average would load 7/8 clips for each new project. Then when I edit them into the project I get this funny glitch on the video playback (looks like lines going across and diagonally across the video) it only lasts for 1 frame each time. At first I thought it was a one off but it also occurs when I make Photo Slideshows and other videos. Its extremely annoying and very noticeable in the videos and occurs randomly every 5 seconds or so in some cases. Typically the video is captured on a Canon 500D in either 720p or 1080p, which the playback on the raw files from the camera is fine. The problem persists also when the video is finalised or exported in any way, sometimes maybe only once throughout the entire video but equally can appear every few seconds in others, I can post more information if required but can't seem to find this problem anywhere on google and would like to see if anyone has had similar experiences? I've attached one of the frames on a recent project I made which has the problem. Thanks |

Hi there,
I'm having the exact same problem. It's not happening on every video that render but it's happening on a few of them. I was able to get a clean render (after about 3 or 4 attempts) after closing down all my other programs that were running so that just my iMovie was open - but that doesn't seem like a permanent fix as I'm having the issue again. I'm also looking for a solution and as you, I will be switching over to FCPX soon too. In the meantime, if anyone has any suggestions on how to fix the video glitches I would also be most grateful. Many thanks, k |

I bought a Canon HFM41 last year and thought that I had a bad camera. Transferred video to iMovie and had the same random glitches shown in the picture. I even tried transferring footage from a different camera with the same results. I downloaded the free trial of FCP earlier this year and on both my 2 year old iMac and 1 year old Mac book pro, could not even really use the program as there were so many bugs and crashes that prevented me from finishing a project. Not talking rocket science here - I want to take a couple hours of family movies and transfer onto DVD with the best quality possible. So far, I have eliminated iDVD as a tool because it literally strips away the HD resolution that almost all cameras shoot in these days and now I am on the verge of eliminating iMovie. Will probably have to use the PC software that came with my camera using Parallels or Bootcamp to get something good. For years, I have bragged to others in the PC community about the on-board software that comes with every Mac for video editing. A Mac evangelist of sorts. This is not the Apple that I know anymore.
