Computer running extremely slow

I am new to this forum and have an issue that just started. I have a 15" macbook pro with 8GB memory and 1TB hard drive running Lion OS. Just recently it started running extremely slow. Memory starts at 6.7 GB after bootup and drops to 8MB in less than 5 minutes. Once it gets that low, the computer comes to a screeching halt and takes forever to do anything. All I get is nothing and occasionally the spinning wheel until the computer catches up with what was requested (clicking on something, opening/closing app, etc.) What would be the cause? Any help is appreciated.

Right after the machine boots up, open your "Activity Monitor" (Applications, Utilities, Activity Monitor.app) and keep it open so you can see what's going on.

Look for any large consuming activity that sucking up the memory and/or CPU usage. Something is going on that's using all your resources. Let us know what it is.
