Hi,

Having a bit of a problem, my computer in a Lion based mac. I wanted a fresh install deleting everything. Stupidly I think I deleted the whole operating system. So I bought Leopard 10.6.3 to try and install it on first as you need to go on the mac store to download Lion and without being able to get on the laptop (it hangs on white screen with Apple logo) I can't reinstall Lion.

So I bought Leopard and it recognises the disc to run it but once you click on it. It just hangs on the white background too. What can I do to get my mac back running again?

Thank you for any help.

First of all, you can't install older OS versions than originally came with the Mac.

Have you tried booting to your Lion Recovery Partition (boot while holding Command R)?

Of course, I know everything . . . I just can't remember it all at once.

Well that was a waste of money then haha.

Yeah I have tried that. It asks me to enter my network but then it doesn't show up with my modem to enter it. That's why I got Leopard.

Really need some help.

Can you access by doing a direct ethernet connection (hardwire to your router)?
If not, I see two options for you:

1) Take your Mac to an Apple Store and let them help you sort it out
2) Since you have already bought Snow Leopard and Leopard, go ahead an add to your collection by purchasing the Lion USB ($69 USD at the online Apple Store) OS X Lion USB Thumb Drive - Apple Store (U.S.)

FWIW You can probably resell your Leopard OS Disk fairly easily. I just sold mine a couple of months ago on Amazon

You were just replying just as I was giving some more info.

I haven't tried direct ethernet but will give it a go now.

I was just looking around and found this.

If you don't want to go to the external site.

It basically says

I was trying to erase my data on my MacBook Air in disk utility, but I messed things up and now when I restart I get a folder with a question mark. If I hold down option i get the Internet recovery option. It doesn't show my network only a ..., which if I choose it shows the wifi symbol and padlock for them to be entered. I entered my network name and password, but my password keeps being rejected. Any help would be much appreciated.

Is the encryption protocol being used on the network, compatible? You do know you can't use WEP, right?

If you can't use WPA, then turn off encryption temporarily altogether on the router. Of course you will probably need a computer to do it, unless you do a hard reset on the router and go with no security at all for the restore. The fact that it is a combo router/modem may complicate things as with a reset you may lose your internet connection. I would go the safer route and use a computer to adjust the router settings (to WPA or none)
I've disabled my encryption now so do you know what I would enter in the password bit if not my wep key?

Assuming your router set up was working previously with your Mac, I doubt that is the problem. But, absolutely, don't use WEP.

WPA or WPA2 is what we reccomend.

Just to update you, this was the problem. When I set my router to WPA it found my router and did the internet recovery just fine.
