G'day and welcome to the forums.

You got it in one - malware. A search would have revealed this:-

Codec-M Installer???

Get it from a torrent site?

Hang on to those original install discs like grim death! Using OS X.7 or later make a bootable USB thumb drive before running Installer!

Perhaps a format of the hard drive and a clean install. If possible you could trash Safari using App Delete or App Trap to get rid of all associated files, however I doubt Mac OS X will let you remove Safari.

Also have a read of this link from Search:-

You should have kept the download file that you installed codec-m with. In there is a uninstall feature. Very strange for a malware program, but it seemed to work nonetheless. Checked the activity monitor and other system places and nothing out of the ordinary is running.

To uninstall this plug in, go to Safari>Preferences>Extensions. Once there you should see the plugin and have the option to uninstall it. Hope this helps.
