I bought a Canon 8380CDW printer recently and set it up with my iMac running OS X Lion 10.7.3 and my wife's Windows 7 laptop.
I installed the latest versions of the drivers available from Canon and I can print and scan from the printer. My wife's Windows 7 laptop, however, has the ability to print in B&W and one-sided and control many other options. I've done some searching and can't seem to do the same with my iMac. When I go the Print & Scan section, I can't really set anything. I've determined that the Printer Presets are the ones that might be able to control these options, but I don't get anything of value in the presets menu, and when I do ask it to Show Presets, I cannot edit/modify anything.. See attached picture for what I'm talking about. I've tried to uninstall and re-install the printer and nothing changes.. -- Regards ...Ashwin Be sure to read the Community Guidelines | The more information you provide, the better answers you get, remember GIGO. |

It's the driver. Windows printer drivers are better developed and usually have more options. I have the same problem with my HP LaserJet. It can do all sorts of things in Windows and even when using it in Linux Ubuntu, but very limited with OS X. Same with my Canon all in one.

I just bought this printer, too, and while you can use it with a mac, it requires a little more set-up. For instance, in order to control the one-sided or two-sided aspect, you actually change that from the print window, Under Presets, then finishing where you can select one-sided or two sided and then you need to save it as a preset. For my machine, it was preset for double-sided printing. The choice for B&W is under Quality. Save in whatever combinations of presets you desire. The scanner is also interesting to set up!

Could you tell me some step-by-step ideas on what to do and where so that I can get the single sided B&W printing working?? -- Regards ...Ashwin Be sure to read the Community Guidelines | The more information you provide, the better answers you get, remember GIGO. |

I created a step-by-step (with pics)! You do the black & white also the way you do the one-and two-sided (under Finishing) as detailed in the attachment, but you do it under Quality for B&W. Save the settings you desire as a preset, named the way you like it.

Thank you so much for the step-by-step guide, I was looking in the right places but just not understanding what I was doing. This helped me greatly!

I got the scanner to work, but I find that when I scan to my computer, I can only scan from the flatbed scanner and can't use the automatic feeder. I've resorted to using a USB flash drive and using the automatic feeder for multiple pages and that seems to work for me.
If you've found it behave differently, then do let me know what I'm missing.. Also, I found that scans using the automatic feeder and the USB flash drive was sized properly while the flatbed scanned document was just gynormous.. -- Regards ...Ashwin Be sure to read the Community Guidelines | The more information you provide, the better answers you get, remember GIGO. |

You must download the scanner dmg I pictured at the top of the printer instructs and install that, too. Then, go to Applications, Canon MF Utilities and launch that item. You set customized defaults by clicking on the Color Scan or B&W Scan and changing it the way you like it - for instance, I set my default resolution at 75 ppi and have it save to a Scans folder I created on my hard drive. Then hit Ok and the next time you open it, it will have your default settings. So, I set that up and then go to the printer and manually hit the power save button, Scan, then in the small window select computer, hit ok, destination my hard drive, hit ok, then B&W or color, hit ok and then go back to my computer and hit the Start button in the MF Toolbox. My coworker says she can just do it without the physical manipulation of the printer, but I haven't had that luck (but I haven't played around with it yet).
Good luck! L |

Kudos again lindalouwho, I've now configured the printer->computer scanner to use the feeder which greatly helps in not having to deal with the flash drive..
I've managed to figure out a lot of things about the Mac world since my move a couple of years ago, and getting my simple printer going was trivial, but with a more complicated printer, my lack of Mac knowledge really let me down.. ![]() Thanks again.. -- Regards ...Ashwin Be sure to read the Community Guidelines | The more information you provide, the better answers you get, remember GIGO. |

Great post, it worked for me!! I was lost until I saw this post. Using Mountain Lion.
FYI - I noticed that scanning to a memory stick is 3 times faster than over WiFi. I can even select PDF (Compact) which makes the file sizes much smaller. I haven't tried scanning over ethernet yet. |

I scan wirelessly, , but you do have to download and install the Canon scanner driver, "MF Toolbox."
Then, i open MF toolbox application and make my selections. Don't forget to make selections in the Save tab as well. If you hit okay, it saves those selections. Start is for beginning the scan. Before hitting "Start" to scan, I have to go to the printer, hit the Scan button and select my computer as the destination, tell it color or B&W, etc., then hit "Start" in the MF Toolbox and it scans to the folder I directed it in the MF Toolbox tab for Save. Usually, I open the doc with Adobe Acrobat Pro and under the Document menu select Optimize Scanned PDF because I like to scan in at a higher resolution and use Adobe to reduce it rather than scan low and hope for the best. |

Someone just sent me a message and I replied to it, so I'll post it here, too.
>>>>I need your help if possible and you have some time . We have a Canon 8380cdw and we have problems with 1 sided printing and a4 format. I can set a preset for A4, it's gonna print A4 but each time we print a page it's gonna drag the page again but it won't print nothing on the other side, it prints only 1 side but it drags in every page again as it would print both sides. It works... but it's annoying. On the first page when i want to print if i choose Layout i can't choose Two-sided: on or off, that section it's gray, can't edit it. If you have any suggestions...<<<<<<< Hello. I can give you some advice, but really, their customer service line is top-notch and they helped me figure out a few things. The first thing you need to understand is that the default setting is double-sided printing. The way you change this is right now from the browser, pretend you're going to print this window and hit the command & P button which will bring up the print window. If your print window is expanded, under the number of copies you should see the print box. Maybe this image I stuck here directly below will show up, but it's not in the preview. Anyway, there is one item that will show your browser's name (mine is Firefox so that's what shows there). Click there and choose another selection: Finishing. From there, choose single-sided printing, then go back where Finishing appears and click Paper Handling and click that tiny box that says Scale to Fit Paper Size and then choose US Letter. Wait, you're not done yet. Go up to the Presets near the top of the box and click that and choose near the bottom of those selections: Save Current Setting as Preset. and name it something like Single-Sided US Letter. Then, print the page you're on using that setting and it should go to that setting every time (or you might need to choose it). Making that the default setting is another issue. It should stay with that setting until you change to another, however. Good Luck. |
