Files will not delete out of trash

I tried to securely delete several files, but now, the trash says they are securely deleting the files, but it's been stuck on that for days. I can not force the delete either. Because of this, I can not move files from folder to folder in my finder. And when I download files or programs, they do not appear in my downloads folder. How do I fix this issue with my trash can?

Need all the info - what OS? how much free space on the hard drive? size of files being deleted?
(I ask this because it sounds like you have no drive free space...)

I have Mac OS X Lion, and the files were large. They were 3-4 GB's. I was trying to securely delete movies.

Force a Restart?
Try doing one at a time for such large files.

Why don't you just delete them and then secure erase your entire drive when you are done?
