Need help updating software

When updating software i keep getting the message the installer could not install some files in "/".
Any ideas what this is. Genius bar at apple couldn't fix it.

Operating system? Maybe downloading the OS X.7.3, X.6.8 or X.5.8 Combo Updater may do the trick. Would have supplied link if details provided.
