Screen blacks out

The screen on my imac goes black sometimes. Sometimes it comes back by itself and sometimes not. If I reboot it operates much better but usually slows down and blacks out. I have had my mac for three yrs and this has just started. What do I need to do to fix it?

When that happens again, if possible, hook another monitor to your iMac or even a TV to see if that same black out occurs on the monitor or TV. Let us know the results.

I don't have another monitor to hook it to. What seems to happen is when I let it just go to sleep, instead of signing off, when I come back to it and wake it up is when the problem occurs.
