Question about time machine

I am planning on updating the failing hard drive in my 2007 20" iMac with an SSD. Is it recommended to keep all my files such as iTunes music, movies, photos on an external and just run all the apps and OS on the SSD? If I do that can I still use a separate external for Time Machine? If so, how exactly would that work if my OS and Apps are on the SSD and all other files are on an external? Right now I just have one external connected just for time machine and it simply backs up my internal HD where everything is stored.

Since the SSD will be more limited in space, you may find you need to move some files off it to an external HDD. If so, definitely continue using a separate external for Time Machine, or you won't have a backup!!! You do need to make sure the media drive isn't in the exclusion list for Time Machine.
Please verify and include the exact model/year of your Mac and OS X version number (available from "About This Mac", then "More Info" on the Apple menu).
