My new iPhone 4 won't sync with my iMac 10.4.11. Can I upgrade my OS online and how?

Cannot tell you if you can upgrade your Mac's OS until we know exactly what model Mac you have. An no...you cannot upgrade the OS online...unless this Mac is new enough to run OS 10.7 Lion (Lion is the only downloadable Mac OS).

Mac Specs: iMac i5 2.7GHz, 16GB memory, OS 10.10.1

harryb2448 is online now
And even then to download Lion you need to install OS X.6 Snow Leopard so it looks like you need to spend a handful of bucks alas.

Hang on to those original install discs like grim death! Using OS X.7 or later make a bootable USB thumb drive before running Installer!
