I own a 17" iMac running Tiger and a white MacBook running Snow Leopard. My MacBook may be on the outs, so I'm thinking about making the iMac my primary machine. What I'm wondering is if I can use a Time Machine backup from my MacBook and restore it to the iMac. I realize this will wipe everything on the iMac, and that's fine with me. Anybody know if this will work?

G'day and welcome to the forums.
Hard to say without you supplying the necessary information as G4 and G5 iMacs both came in 17" format. Neither will handle Snow Leopard as it is Intel only. The last OS for PowerPC models is Leopard OS X.5.8 and that is it alas. Hang on to those original install discs like grim death! Using OS X.7 or later make a bootable USB thumb drive before running Installer! |

An iMac 5.1 is a Core 2 Duo so it will handle Snow Leopard, and even Lion. Suggest you look for a Snow Leopard full retail min stall DVD as the MacBook install will be using different drivers to the iMac. The original Snow Leopard disc will not work with an iMac, so there is a fair chance you will run into difficulties.
At $29.00 Snow Leopard is cheap. Hang on to those original install discs like grim death! Using OS X.7 or later make a bootable USB thumb drive before running Installer! |
