logitech speakers on a Mac book pro

I have a 1 yr old Mac book pro. I am trying to attach external speakers(Logitech z110) but they don't register in my computer. Any suggestions?

You attached them to a USB port?

You attached the audio cable to the headphone jack?

Must do both of the above for them to work.
