Sluggish Macbook Pro

I have a 4 year old macbook pro that has become very sluggish and slow. I get a lot of the swirling rainbow circle things when there are more than a couple of tasks running. It takes 5 minutes to restart. I have 'CleanMyMac' installed and run it regularly but the machine seems to get slower every day now. What steps do I take to restore my MacBook so it runs like it did or at least close to it when it was new?

How full is your hard drive?

When was the last time you repaired permissions?

How much ram do you have?

How many applications do you usually have open at the same time?

The hard drive is about half full so there is more than 100gb free. I have a program called 'TechToolPro 6' that I use to do maintenance along with 'CleanMyMac', so I am trusting those programs to do the things I don't know how to do like repair permissions. If you can explain how to repair permissions I will try that.

- applications folder
- utilities folder
- launch Disk Utility
- click on the "Repair Permissions" button
