I'm not sure Lion is going to fix the problem you're having with iPhoto or not but yes gestures are available for the magic mouse. When you go to system preferences and select the mouse it will have different options you can enable or not. I also found Hot Corners to be very useful for pulling up the Dashboard and Launchpad. They gestures are a little different and fewer than the trackpad b/c they have less area but you still get several options (i.e. go back on a webpage with one finger sliding back, two finger double tap for mission control, etc)
