Oh dear. Now I see what the problem was.
I've been doing some work with a large JSON file. The contents of the bash_profile are that JSON file (122KB). I must have pasted it into Terminal maybe?

is ok, I do that all the time. it's always fun when you go to paste a command and discover you have 100 days worth of log in the buffer.
