getting gray screen with circle and line thru it, no fixes have worked.

trying to reinstall snow leopard, following directions in Pogue's book.
start up from disk, get install screen. because i want a clean reinstall with archive
i am told to click the restart button. but there is no restart button. if i click restart from apple menu, all i get is the no-you-can't-go there sign on the gray screen.

i can open safe user mode, holding the shift key

Snow Leopard can not do an Archive and Reinstall. However, a reinstall of Snow Leopard over itself is designed not to wipe out data, photos, documents, user settings, etc. It will only overwrite system files and kexts. Afterward you must run software update to bring SL back up to date. Always make a backup first!
