CDs and DVDs suddenly won't mount

I'm on a good old warhorse of a PowerPC G5 running 10.5.8. I have both the internal built-in CD-DVD drive and a Lacie external drive. Earlier today I popped in an audio CD and then closed iTunes because I wasn't going to listen to it just then. About ten minutes later, I happen to notice that the disc image in my finder is no longer a disc icon but a hard drive icon! And it no longer shows on my desktop. I open iTunes and get nothing. I go onto Disk Utility and it says the disc won't mount. This was also attempted with both drives, then with two other audio CDs and a work archive data DVD.
Well, I frequently need to access my work archive DVDs, so right now I'm in a pickle. Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
