Lion question

I need some mac help. I understand i can have multiple desktops. Is there a way to change their background photo so that its easy to know which desktop I'm working on? Also, can you put certain applications on that desktop so that, for example, I can have my photography stuff in one spot, work stuff in another, etc....?

Are you running multiple monitors or setting up multiple "spaces" using one monitor?
