How can i read a wps file on my macbook pro? I have changed the file to docx to see if that would do anything and I still see these weird symbols/words. I am running OS X.

*.wps files can be read and opened with MS Word. Since Microsoft Works is Windows only, I'm not sure if Word for the Mac can read them. Word for Windows certainly can though.

Word can open them but it has to be Word 2010. Older versions can't open. Neo Office can apparently open these files as well. <- Which is free.
