I deleted some folders to free up some space on my G4 Powerbook running OSX 10.3.9 but now I cannot save any files when running programs like Garageband or Word for example. I have obviously deleted a folder which is necessary for this action but don't know what. Does anyone have any suggestions?

FURTHER INFO - WHAT I HAVE TRIED TO ALREADY DO. Opening files for every program and saving. Photographs display in iPhoto no problem, I just can't save anything new in Garageband, Illustrator or Word for example. With Garageband it says Save Error > cannot save. In Illustrator it says to save - when you do no file is created, and no folder is allowed to be created either. In Finder, when creating a new folder, the message is The operation could not be completed. An unexpected error occured (error code -51)

Start by repairing Permissions, preferably using OnyX 1.5.3. from Titanium's Software • Download. Repair both Permissions and Scripts.

Note: if you haven't gone through this process before, it could take quite some time, like 15-20 minutes. You don't need to do the S.M.A.R.T. thing or verify the disk unless you suspect a hard drive problem.

An alternative to OnyX is to use Disk Utilities > First Aid > Verify Permission/Repair Permissions, but it's not as good as OnyX.
