Open Terminal, and instead of using TextEdit, try using "sudo pico /etc/hosts" to edit the file. Enter your password when prompted. You should see the text of your /etc/hosts file. Use the arrow keys to navigate, change what you need to change, and Control-X to close, Y to save, Return when prompted to change the filename.

I'm running Lion, but I think the host file should be the same for Snow Leopard, if I recall.

Yep, it should be exactly that, probably in Lion as well since we're simply declaring the localhost IP's (both IPV4 and IPV6)

Do we still have pico in Lion? I've been using nano since Tiger.

Looks like they've created a symbolic link between pico and nano. I hadn't noticed that before.

You can use the readlink tool to see what a symbolic link points to from the CLI:
Code:
~ :: readlink /usr/bin/pico
nano
So pico sure does point to nano which makes sense given the licensing issues with pico.
