I upgraded my Imac with Tiger to Snow Leopard using the $29 Snow Leopard program. I did not go to Leopard at all! Everything I read about using Snow Leopard with Tiger said to do a clean install. I backed up everything I could on a separate portable HD before starting.
I inserted the Snow Leopard install disk and followed directions. I expected a question asking something about "clean install" or format or something like that but nothing like that happened. I did not worry about this because I had the original Tiger install disk anyway. The Snow Leopard install took around 60-70 minutes to restart. When I restarted I had Snow Leopard and over 90% of the stuff that was on my Tiger OS. A few more things worked okay after installing Rosetta. Rosetta was included in the Snow Leopard upgrade. So, without any clean install I was able to still use just about everything that I was using on Tiger. It took several hours of getting the updates "up to date" and now I am running 10.6.8. From this position I think I can download the new Lion upgrade without any problem. |

1. No, there's no way to go directly from Tiger to Lion. You MUST install Snow Leopard first, at least until the Lion USB key version ($69) is available (and maybe even then!). 2. Programs that work under Tiger are unlikely to work under Lion without upgrading. Obviously Lion will replace your QuickTime, iTunes, Safari etc with versions that work, but I'm talking about third-party programs. I should think a majority of them (unless you've been EXCEPTIONALLY good about keeping updates up-to-date) will not work anymore. |
