i have an old iBook G4 with Tiger OS X 10.4.11 and I can't seem to find an external hard drive that is compatible. Most say system requirements OS X 10.5 and above. I do not want to upgrade as I just use my Mac at home for photos, music, and surfing. Need to move my music and photos to an external drive. Any suggestions on a brand that'll work? Thanks!

OWC VLU2SD22XLS Value Line USB2.0/1.1 22X... in stock at OWC Generally OWC has less expensive external CD/DVD drives ($29-$32)...but this seems to be the least expensive they have currently. Looks like it might have been the wrong link... try OWC Mercury On-The-Go Pro Bus-Powered FireWire 800/400, USB 2.0 and 2.5" SATA Portable Hard Drive & SSD Solution
System requirements at the bottom of the page say 10.2.x or later. |

1. Just buy any "USB" based external HD from your favorite computer store. For example this one for $57.99: OWC MSU35100GB8 100GB Mercury On-The-Go USB 3.0 /... in stock at OWC 2. Get the appropriate external USB HD housing (IDE or SATA)...if you have an extra internal HD just laying around your place. Then install the HD into the external housing, plug into your Mac via USB...good to go. My 2c worth - a refurbished or second-hand external IDE (ATA) drive, for storage only, connected via a USB-IDE adaptor, total cost about US$30. I'd recommend an externally-powered drive, rather than bus-powered.
I have three or four external IDE drives (incl an old IBM Bigfoot), which is over the top, but I can't bear to part with them. Actually, new IDE drives are getting harder to come by but several retailers (other than OWC) seem still to carry stocks. ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ Please post your Mac (or other) specs and MacOS version in your post, your profile or your signature. It helps us to help you better. I'm leaving now to go and find myself. If I should return before I get back, please ask me to wait.

As it is a G4, if you want it to be bootable get a Firewire model and as hughvane says from there.
Hang on to those original install discs like grim death! Using OS X.7 or later make a bootable USB thumb drive before running Installer! |
