Problem installing osx after hd replacement

I just replaced the HD in my mbp and when trying to install osx it won't run. I do the c and power and it runs for a few minutes with the circle then it just turns to a black screen and that's it. Any idea what the problem is?

try holding the "command" key or the "c" key on startup
