Before installing OS X Lion, did a back up with Carbon Copy Cloner. Only wanted my iTunes library but it looks like it cloned the HD. Lost 86.9GB. Wanted to erase in Disk Utility but it was "read only" and was grayed out. So I put files in the trash then emptied the trash.
In Terminal "mount" located the .dmg file
( /dev/disk1s1 on /Volume/C C C)
"unmount" and "rm"
It completed but that 86.9GB of space is still gone.
Terminal "mount" doesn't locate it now, so I'm at a loss as to why I'm still missing all that space. I'd really not want to wipe the HD but i don't know how to get that space back. Any suggestions?!
Thanks

try getting a program called disk drill this will find lost partitions but not sure how it will work but you could give it a go.

Have a look at DaisyDisk - Analyze disk usage and free up disk space on Mac You need $10 if you want other features (free to dl though) but this is by far the best Space Finding App i have come across . . .... It has a cool looking interface but it will show you where the 86GB is

HTH

hey tattooedmac,
I've tried disk utilityX which sounds similar.. after a scan it shows the visual of used space in varying colors in your HD. the spec shows the available space minus the 86.9GB I should have but nowhere am I able to find the location of that missing space anywhere! I'll try Daisy Disk too

^^^ No worries mate. Daisy Disk as i said is the best i have found.
Have you ever had Windows installed at all on the old system ??
If you have done a Lion install then try and look for a file named "previous OS" or something of similar name. I remember installing SL and i found a file of my old system. I believe this is what you may be looking for.
Have a read of this KB article Mac OS X: About the Archive and Install feature as it will explain better what im trying to convey . . . . In particular the 1st few paragraphs.

HTH

Cheers

I'll try it, I'd rather try than have to wipe the HD and lose all my music and such (luckily the most imp files I backed up externally)!
I never had Windows installed..and also did not do the Lion install. I now only have about 95GB left and want to "revive" it before I do the install..
I thought about doing Archive & Install as opposed to wiping it clean but I'm wondering if my "previous system" has this ghost file in there. Before doing the wipe I was going to try the archive first...
It's just off, the physical (for lack of a better word) is gone but it's "ghost" is taking up a huge chunk of my HD..

Thank you Domb and TattooedMac for all your help with this issue, was very much appreciated!!
I was unable to get the space back no matter what I did though, so I wiped the HD and started over. That is why I did not post because it's not really a helpful answer that I am giving but I guess I need to close this.
It was not too bad though and it's kind of nice to have a clean Mac.
I did have my important files on an external drive which was a lifesaver, my music on iTunes (what I could find) I compressed onto a 8GB portable flash drive, dropped a new folder in users/music/iTunes/library/ and exported to iTunes.
It worked. Synced my iPod & iPhone ipod which was good b/c about a week later it said my iPod was synced w/another library and has happened twice since (same old issue for years ) haha
Still have no clue what happened with that 89GB but I am done using CCC for backing up and will stick to external drives; that experience was enough for me.
...thanks again for the help, appreciate it!

ps. TattooedMac - DaisyDisk is really sweet btw, works well with Lion too. Good thing to use.

Good news that your back up and running mate, but a pity we couldn't find what happened to that huge GB number.
Is nice to have a flying clean Mac. I am happy to help

Yes i wasn't a fan of CCC. Im not really sure what it was about it but i just couldn't bring myself to keep using it when i first was looking for a bootable backup app. I still don't know what it was so i forked out the $ for SuperDuper!.

Well now I will have to check out Super Duper; being that a bootable one is preferable for me as well.
Yes, definitely did learn my lesson with this bout and while I never had an issue with CCC before this; it only takes one wrong turn for me.
I have to admit while I'm happy with a clean Mac; it's still nagging at me. haha
Again, the help was much appreciated!
