I just installed Lion on my 13' MacBook. I had Microsoft Office 2004 installed. After Lion completed its download and was installed on my Mac I tried to type a document with Word 2004 and I got a message reading "You can't open the application Microsoft Word because PowerPC applications are no longer supported." Is there anything I can do for this?

osxx nailed it. You need a version coded for intel chips, not PPC. (aka 2011 only)

Is there any possible way to make Office 2004 compatible with Lion?

If you feel like installing a virtual machine and a powerPC emulator such as sheep shaver, then yes.

The simple answer is no. You'll need to upgrade to Office 2011. It's worth the money in my opinion. If you're short on funds, use OpenOffice or NeoOffice until you're able to save up the cash.

I don't mean to be rude, but I'm amazed how many people pay for and install new operating systems without reading about them ahead of time. There were countless articles on TUAW, Macworld, etc and discussions here about the lack of Rosetta support and which applications that would effect.

Just sort of surprised this still caught people off guard.

I do see your point, to a point, so to speak. I hope that this is not the incorrect forum in which to air this....

Many mac users have updated to Lion, in the hope that they can start to "seamlessly" merge their peripherals. I have an iPad 2, a MBP, an iMac and a couple of iPods. The brave new world of seamless merging has been nice (up until, I might add - this last wee while, post September). I loved how the previous OSs have linked to my other peripherals.

NOW, the problem with your post is that TUAW is an Unofficial site, as are many of the other forums. Discussions about Rosetta support does not enable us mere users to make the leap that our paid-for software (such as Office 2004 and many others) becomes redundant. I have Office 2008, so it doesn't affect me in real terms - but the principle is more important.

Apple (and others) should be required to ensure that there is a clear notice on their OFFICIAL website as to the major software changes that may be required (Let's face it MS Office 2004 is pretty major, and MS is still supporting security updates).

The asymmetry of information is definitely worth questioning, given that we can not ask questions of a specific salesperson, as one would do in a retail environment.

Hopefully, Apple can take the lead, so that we can ensure consumer sovereignty is not infringed - where additional costs are incurred by the consumer as a consequence of purchasing this software.

Well Office 2004 is pretty ancient and no Rosetta support was widely circulated prior to Lion's introduction back in July. Same thing happened with the introduction of Snow Leopard. We (as we were) PowerPC users were left out in the cold. It is called progress.

Hang on to those original install discs like grim death! Using OS X.7 or later make a bootable USB thumb drive before running Installer!
