    Disk utility
Under the First Aid tab of Disk Utility, you can "verify disk permissions" and "repair disk permissions". I'm sorry, but I don't know what that means or what it is actually doing. I am a former PC person. Is what I just described doing what I used to know as optimizing the hard drive? I am copying and pasting the results of what it showed below:

    Specs:
    Imac 27" Retina 3.3GHz, 512GB Flash, 16GB memory, OS X.11.4.
Verify simply runs a check without repairing anything. Repair of course actually runs the repair if needed. Regarding those message just ignore them. The repair complete is the key. Have a read of this post from the Apple web site:-

Hang on to those original install discs like grim death! Using OS X.7 or later make a bootable USB thumb drive before running Installer!
