almost embarrassed to ask this but have not done it in a while...
Installed a new non-formatted HD in my 2011 15" MBP. How do I boot from the dvd and do a clean install from the disks? Not interested in "cloning" the old drive. Want to do a fresh install and then migration assistant from another Mac. Thanks. 27" iMac i5, 2.66, 8GB, 1TB / 21.5" iMac i5 Quad, 2.5, 4GB, 500GB / 15" 2011 15" MBP, 2.2 i7 quad, 8gb, 512gb SSD, Hi Res, AG / 13" MBP, 2.66 C2D, 8GB, 500GB Hybrid / iPad1, 64gb, 3G AT&T |

Use your Snow Leopard install recovery DVD (make sure it's the one that shipped with your MBP and not a retail copy) to boot the machine. Hold down the C key or OPTION key as soon as you hear the chime.
After it boots, select the top menu item "Utilities", "Disk Utility". Select your drive on the left side. Use Disk Utility to partition (one partition) and format the new drive. Name the drive "MacIntosh HD" or whatever you wish. Select the Mac OS Journaled format and the GUID partition scheme. After the drive is formatted you can proceed with the clean install from your DVD. After the installation is complete, you can then proceed with using the Migration Assistant to transfer whatever data you wish from your other machine. |
