QuickTime Issues

I'm trying to play an MP4 file on QT but it gives me this message.

The operation couldn’t be completed. (OSStatus error -12909.)

So I called Mac Support and was told to download the Flip4Mac software, which hasn't solved the issue as well.

I'm not sure what to do and I'm fairly new to MAC, so any help would be brilliant!

You may be missing a codec to play the file. Download and install the free Perian and try again.
