I'm helping out someone that works at a school, and in order to stop one of the more popular pranks among students there (having the computer speak blocks of text aloud), we would like to disable text to speech entirely. Is there a way to accomplish this? Thanks in advance.

From a bit of research, I don't think you can by the look of it.

That's exactly what I'm looking for... unfortunately the preference files have shifted around a bit with Snow Leopard it seems. The preference in the new Voiceover Utility to mute speech doesn't seem to work, either. I'm going to have to look into this further. Thanks for the link; hopefully it will help me figure out the deal in 10.6.

When you're in a forum (but not inside a thread), look at the top of the page above all the threads and right below "Mac-Forums.com > Subforum 1 > Subsubforum 2 > etc etc." There will is a button that says "New Thread." Click that, and you will be creating a new thread in the forum you are currently in. Make sure to post your thread in the most appropriate forum for speedy feedback and so that future people with similar problems can find yours fairly easily. The same button is also below the list of threads in your current forum, btw.

If you do figure it out - be sure to post back. Your question got me curious - and even more so as I ran into dead end after dead end. The link I provided sounded exactly like your situation - but I too tried it on my machine (10.6.7) and it didn't seem to work. I also looked to see if there was any way to disable the 'say' Mac OS X command entirely - as I was guessing it was related to that - but still no joy. Will be curious to know what you discover.
