Hello, I have a MacBook Pro from 2006 that currently runs on Mac OS X v10.4.11. Processor: 2.16 GHz Intel Core Duo. Memory: 2GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM

When I connected my iPhone to my computer this morning, an iTunes warning popped up that said 'The iPhone "Bo Knows iPhones" cannot be used because it requires iTunes version 10.1 or later. Go to itunes.com to download the latest version of iTunes'.

When I go to itunes.com and download iTunes v10.2.1, then try to install it, it says 'Couldn't open "Install iTunes.pkg". This package type requires Mac OS X 10.5.'

Is there a free software upgrade I can easily download for free? Or do I need to buy a new OS X disc from a Mac Store and install that new software... in order to install the new iTunes... in order to connect my iPhone to iTunes...?

I know this is a pretty basic question, and it probably sounds stupid to a lot of you, so please excuse me... But my computer is still in good condition and I've updated the software frequently (it doesn't seem THAT archaic!), so it came as a surprise to find that it is (apparently) so outdated that it can't even connect my iPhone to my iTunes.

I'm actually fine with shelling out some $ for a new OS X, but I don't want to if there's an easy (& free) upgrade I could download somewhere.

Thanks a lot for your help,
Bo Knows

I don't believe so. In fact, a number of folks have had the same query, and it always comes out to the same answer. Unfortunately, if you want to use the latest peripherals, you have to keep your OS up-to-date.

Fortunately, 10.6 is a great upgrade from 10.4. And the nice bonus is that for the $120 you'll spend The Mac Box Set, you'll also get iLife and iWork up to speed.

Liquid and computers don't mix. It might seem simple, but we see an incredible amount of people post here about spills. Keep drinks and other liquids away from your expensive electronics!

There are no free upgrades from one OSX to another; ie, 10.4 to 10.5, only incremental upgrades like 10.4.10 to 10.4.11.

You can upgrade to Snow Leopard(10.6) purely by buying the $29 disc if you don't want the iLife upgrade.
