I'm not even sure of how to explain this, quite frankly. I don't know what I've done, and I'm not even sure of what the (likely minimal or none) consequences of this are but, let me at least try and explain what I'm seeing...

So, let's say that my MacBook Pro's official name is: Doug's MacBook Pro. Then one day, while I'm logging on, I see that this name has changed, yet only ever so slightly, and now the name is: Doug's MacBook Pro (2)

This is exactly what happened, and I don't know the who, what where when's and why's about it. So under what circumstances would something like this happen, and for what reason? In the three years I've been using my Macs, I've never seen this happen before.

I haven't messed with any user settings, and neither has my wife. She never touches my machine, as she has her own. I only ever do maintenance with Onyx, and on the occasion where I don't feel like opening it, I'll just run disk permissions from "disk utility".

The last thing I remember installing is Rosetta Stone, but don't remember much about the install its self.

Thoughts ?

Doug

Sounds like another account, Doug.

What does System Preferences > System > Accounts have to say about this?

Hang on to those original install discs like grim death! Using OS X.7 or later make a bootable USB thumb drive before running Installer!

Is that the name of your user account - home folder in Finder or just the computer name?

Had that happen on mine a couple years ago - am thinking it was only the computer name that was changed somehow. I just went back into 'Sys Pref - Sharing' and changed it back. Never did figure out how it happened.

I cannot be held responsible for the things that come out of my mouth.
In the Windows world, most everything folks don't understand is called a virus.

I can remember reading about two other people who's Shared Mac name all of a sudden got a number behind it and they being recent switchers thought they had a virus
We couldn't figure out why it happened then either, but changing it back in "Sharing" fixed it.

Yeah, just the computer name. How it changed is beyond me. Though I don't mind my Mac having a mind of its own from time to time, so long as it doesn't skrew me over in the process.

Dou...I mean, Fresh.
