when I open preferences and hit network, a small window slides down that says "Your network settings have been changed by another application" with an OK button, but that small window doesn't close

First go to:
Quote:
HD>Library>Preferences>SystemComfiguration
Find that folder. Delete these files (if they exist):
Quote:
com.apple.airport.preferences.plist
NetworkInterfaces.plist
preferences.plist
com.apple.nat.plist
You can then reboot your machine, logout then login, whatever. You will need to reset your internet settings, most likely. This *should* permanently take care of the problem for you though. If not, you could go to System Prefs>Security> and check the box that is marked "Require a password to unlock each System Preferences pane"

That should also solve the problem, but I recommend the first solution I have offered.

Hope this helped!

I tried the second way, but when I go to System Preferences and hit Network, I get the window with choice of ethernet or modem, and then the window slides down again and has the message I stated before and I get stuck there and have to force quit system Preferences. Make any sense? Thanks, Robert

Wait. You tried the second one. Try the first one, as suggested!

Yes, you tried the method where you check the password required box under SysPrefs. Try deleting the .plist files that I have listed, and you should be golden.

Let us know how it works out!

Yes you can.

1. Go to Go in the Menu Bar.
2. Computer
3. Double click computer name
4. Library
5. Preferences
6. System Configuration

And look for the files Moss so kindly mentioned.

Hang on to those original install discs like grim death! Using OS X.7 or later make a bootable USB thumb drive before running Installer!

In Finder, Go is the third item from the right on the left half of your menu bar.
