I'm currently running tiger 10.4.8 on my macbook pro but i need to upgrade my os as my daughter has saved up for a new ipod nano and it's not going to work on tiger. Can i upgrade straight to snow leopard or can it only be done from leopard? Are there any risks?

This has probably been asked before so if you can point me in the right direction i would be eternlly grateful.

Cheers.

To be in compliance with Apple's EULA, you will need to go to Leopard then you can use the Snow Leopard update disk (SL Update DVD cost $27 if I recall rightly), alternatively to still stay within the EULA you can get the Mac Box Set, available here... Mac Box Set (Including OS X Snow Leopard, iLife 09, iWork 09) Single User Pack (Mac): Amazon.co.uk: Software

Hope this helps

However you can go straight from Tiger to Snow Leopard. I think that if Apple really didn't want people to do that, then they wouldn't have made it possible.

We know and understand that but we do not promote those kinds of activities in these forums. The legal way and in accordance with the Apple EULA is that the upgrade is from Leopard to Snow Leopard.

It's on the honor system. If everyone took advantage and was dishonest, Apple would probably have to "lock it down" so-to-speak. We don't want that.

That's a nice thought, but it's not supported by anything Apple has put out.

It might be too late. We'll just have to see if they ever do something like this again. I'm betting that they won't.

Thanks for the replies. So basically i can but it's not the done thing. It would help if apple still had leopard for sale on their site then because i can only find new copies of snow leopard and i need to upgrade. If i do jump from tiger to snow leaopard (and i understand the whole honour thing but then i've used a mac since os9 and updated from there pretty much so i'm sure they can forgive me this once!) will i risk losing data, etc?

False. The EULA says no such thing.

If you really want Leopard, call Apple. They sell it over the phone. Otherwise, don't bother.

I seem to remember reading that they don't have it anymore, and that was several months ago. Someone on a forum tried to order it and couldn't. But, I'm sure I couldn't find that post.

You can still purchase Leopard (OS X 10.5) from:

Amazon.com: Mac OS X Version 10.5.6 Leopard: Software

Buy.com - Apple Mac OS X v.10.5.4 Leopard

OS, Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard, (DVD) Retail - FastMac

But all of these retailers are selling it for well about the suggested retail price.

I own two macs already, i'm not going to buy another just so i can have the lastest os and not upset anyone...this isn't microsoft you now!

Did you miss this part? It costs more, about as much as Leopard from Apple plus Snow Leopard. But, I don't think Apple has any Leopards caged up anymore.

Not if you select the correct installation option.
