I have an iMac 4,1, running Tiger 10.4.11 with 1gb RAM. Should I increase RAM to 2gig before upgrading with Mac Box Set?

In short, you don't have to but you should.

Im using 2gig and just about to update on a macbookpro.

From what Ive heard its definately advisable getting another gig of ram.

Its better to buy your own ram rather than direct frm Apple as its more expensive.

Also try and get the same brand, model of ram if you can, they work better in identical pairs.
