Is there any way to change the black background of Expose when selecting /previewing Spaces? It's horrendous, like if Apple forgot to finish it. Anything else than black would be better.

Welcome,
No, to the best of my knowledge that is not possible. It most likely is just a defined color in the spaces code that is only changeable by the Apple.
I once tried to change the screensaver lock screen background from black to something different and didn't get anywhere either.
