OS 10.6 - Snow leopard install

Hi.. I have just got a new hard drive put into my MacBook pro but can anyone please help and tell me how to get the operating system onto the new hd? When I insert the snow leopard disc and go through the set up procedures when it comes to selecting a disc to install the os onto no icon appears etc.. Does the new hd have to be formatted ?? And how do I go about it?? Hope someone can help
