Remote access help

Hi all,

Quick question for you all!

I would like to be able to remotely access my dads MB from my MBP and be able to basically take control of his machine (including installing apps and stuff). The reason I want to do this is because it would stop the head ache of him calling me and having to explain what to do without seeing anything...

Also it needs to be a solution that doesnt require being on the same network... as he is at his house in the North, and I am in London...

Im looking for the best (and free) way of doing this.

There is something called Apple Remote Desktop Server that is built into OSX since 10.4, you will be able to use that for free and completely take over the machine see the desktop, move files, start downloads, install programs etc.

Oh almost forgot, if that seems too complicated you can use LogMeIn, located here:
http://secure.logmein.com/uk it's web based just needs a small download on both machines, also the basic version is free, but will do what you need it to do.

I don't think this is the right thread for this topic.....
However, take this as a plus 1 for logmein. Brilliantly tool. I use it for exactly the purpose you have mentioned. Can't recommend it enough. There's an iPhone/iPad app for it too.

You may also wish to look at TeamViewer. This works well enough too. Though personally, I prefer logmein.

Let me give another recommendation for logmein. I also use it to work on my parents computer and help them out. It works well if my macbook is plugged into my monitor. The screen on the macbook is a bit small to see everything inside the browser window.

Its free and very easy to use. Just don't hit commandQ while working as that just closes your browser. At some point I hope to stop that.

+1 for LogMeIn.com

I've been using this site for years to manage many computers remotely. They actually just released the Mac client a few years ago, so you can control a Mac from Mac/Win-box, instead of being able to just control a Windows machine from a Mac/Win-box.
