I have a two-year old MacBook (model identifier: MacBook 4,1) and a 10.6.4 Snow Leopard running on it.

However, my automatic software update no longer works. The message I receive every time when I try to run it is that 'cannot connect to server', but I have no problem with my network connection.

I have downloaded the 10.6.4 combo updater, but this did not fix the problem.

What shall I do?
QUOTE Thanks

Welcome to Mac Forums.

Go to User(you)/Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist
and
HD/Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist
and drag both of them to the desktop and try again.
