split screen when os starts up! help?!

when i start up my white macbook and it loads up to the os, the screen is split and it's like a mirror effect. this happens randomly when i try to start up my laptop. if i get lucky, the os just loads up regularly. now, i try to avoid completely shutting off my laptop so it doesn't happen. can anyone help? thanks!

Maybe something you installed recently? Hard to say.

well at one point, the laptop wouldn't even turn on anymore. when i reinstalled the os, it would load up correctly, but i would never seem to get rid of the split screen problem...

Have a look at this link and try the suggested resetting of the PRAM and power management:-
