Hi folks,

I just picked up a 17" MBP, and it shipped with Leopard. When it showed up, I didn't even think to check what version of OSX I was running, and the first thing that I did was go through the series of software updates through the update tool.

After that, (when I noticed it) I did an upgrade from the SL install DVD, along with the extras (mail, Safari, etc). However it didn't seem to upgrade any of my applications - any of the "stock" apps that I try to run throw an error message that they're incompatible with my current OS version.

Is there a step that I missed somewhere along the way? Almost everything I run gives me the "You can't use this version of the application" error message. My OS is now 10.6.4, and Software Update reports that there are no updates available.

Thanks in advance for any insight.

I'm not really sure what you mean by "stock" apps. But generally speaking...not all applications are compatible with OS 10.6...and may need an update to run.

If there is no update available...then you need to install "Rosetta"...a program that allows "PPC" applications to run in the 10.6 OS environment.

Check out the "Snow Leopard Compatibility List" to see what the "deal" is with the apps you're having problems with:

This was a case of me still being a Mac newbie 6 months after getting my first one, haha. In my zest for maximum organization, I moved all of the usual apps (Front Row, iPhoto, etc) into neatly organized folders underneath Applications. So when I upgraded, it installed SL-compliant versions of all of them, but left the old ones in place - which were tied to my dock.

I'm up and running now, albeit a tad embarrassed.

Thank you!
