(Command)⌘ Shift 4 = Select to Capture to png. Leopard shows measurements by the curser.
⌘ Shift 3 = Capture screen to png.
⌘ Shift 4 then press space-bar = a shot of a single window & drop shadow

The pngs are put on the desktop.
Use control at the same time and both just copy to clip board.
Check the Utility Grab for more Options.

I've found the Grab utility, but when I try to open it nothing happens. Is there anything else I need to do?

Are you sure the application is launching? When you open it, does the title bar change to read, "Grab"? If so, the application is running. You have to go through the menus to determine what you want to capture.
