Hi,

I have a macbook pro 7,1 with Mac OS X 10.6.3. I've partitioned my harddisk into 3 parts: mac, linux, swap. When I try to add another partition using Disk Utility, I get this message:

MediaKit reports no such partition macbook pro.

Any ideas on how I can fix this?

I've seen that error reported by users numerous times, but unfortunately every time the solution has been to erase the drive and start over. There may be some other way to correct the partition error but I haven't found one. It's some kind of partitioning error that sometimes occurs when creating partitions using Disk Utility. I suspect it happens because the disk had sector errors.

Did you run Disk Utility verify and repair prior to partitioning? If not, that's something you should always do first. The only thing I can suggest at this point is to backup your OS X partition, erase the drive, get it back to one partition, make sure the disk is OK, and try again.

As far as creating partitions for Linux, you really do not need a swap partition as long as you have sufficient memory. Assuming you want to run the latest version of Ubuntu for example, your MBP should have more than enough memory. I've run Ubuntu with only 1 GB of memory and never once hit the swap partition.

Regards.
