Hi,

I'm new to the forum and to Macs. I only got given a mac 1,1 from a good friend and was looking to upgrade the OS. however the update ended up destroying my OS so I can no longer run the computer - something about a kernel issue...

I'm not sure what OS it orinally had but I was wondering if its possible to run Snow leopard on it without upgrading the ram or hard drive?

If not what operating system should I run for best results.

I'm also looking to use boot camp. I believe its 1.83 ghz, with 2x 512 ram and a 60gb hard drive.

Yes you can run Snow Leopard (OS 10.6). Any Intel based Macintosh can run Snow Leopard.

Hope this helps,

yes thanks, and thanks for the quick reply!

Will SL run ok, or will it run slow as I have the minimum specs?

Would it be better to run Leopard (as it only requires 512mb of ram)? or would snow leopard still be faster?

I don't recall the exact requirements but I can tell you that even if it's not specified Leopard really doesn't run well with anything less than 1GB. Snow Leopard is pretty much the same.

Upgrading to 2GB should cost you less than $50 and it's a very simple DIY.

Liquid and computers don't mix. It might seem simple, but we see an incredible amount of people post here about spills. Keep drinks and other liquids away from your expensive electronics!

I had Snow Leopard installed on a slightly newer MacBook than yours (2.0ghz processor, 1 gig of ram)...and Snow Leopard ran just fine on it.

One thing to be sure of (before upgrading) is make sure that any software applications that you currently run in OS 10.5 are compatible with OS 10.6. You don't want to upgrade to 10.6...and find out that your favorite programs no longer run.

If you do decide to upgrade the memory (highly recommended as that is still a capable machine, but it will be a bit RAM starved), here's a few links for you:

Compatible memory from Crucial:
Computer memory upgrades for Apple MacBook 2.16GHz Intel Core Duo Laptop/Notebook from Crucial.com

Compatible memory from OWC:
Apple MacBook Memory DDR2 667MHz up to 4.0GB and up to 500GB Internal Hard Drive upgrades too

And the actual process to upgrade it:

I have a friend running SL on 1gig of RAM in his iMac and he can run a ton of apps just fine with no slow down. You'll be fine on 1 gig of RAM, I think they just listed it as the minimum since that's the minimum amount of RAM that intel macs shipped with.

Unless you're like my mum, who keeps the desktop cluttered, trash full, and has a million apps open at once, you'll get away with 1GB, although, even then, I find her Mac with the same specs as mine, except for mine having 2GB, quite noticeably slower.
Therefore, even though it runs fine with 1GB, I'd still recommend the 2GB.

I'm guessing that you mentioned to your mum that she doesn't need to have every app. she uses open at the same time (all the time). For some folks that do this...you can almost never have enough ram!

This is where folks get confused as too whether they actually need more ram...or having more ram would be "nice".

You wouldn't believe how frazzled I get when I see my mum and suss out her Mac. Usually spend hours cleaning things up, put things where they are supposed to be, and the list goes on.
I have given her many easy to follow routines, and set up OnyX automation so all she has to do is run it every now and then. She misplaces the lists, and forgets what to do
Just trying to get her to install the software updates is hard enough. lol
Finally organised a larger HD for her, and more RAM to try to compensate for the mess.
I don't know how she does it, whether it's her eyesight, or just if she does it to see my reactions, but she even ends up with docs and disk images in her apps folder, apps and songs in her docs folder, and duplicates all over the place
I wonder if it's the grass she smokes since getting cancer a few yrs back lol
Funny enough, she teaches computing at a University.... so maybe it's just a Windows user on Mac thing that she's got going on! hehe

Paulib, good time to get onto your mate - if u did not get the original install disks for the computer get onto him and chase him for it/them.
Then you can do a fresh install of SL and have a new computer.
Also have a read of McBies comments here and decide on your back up strategy so that you start out with a safety net in place.
