Connecting a camera as a removable device?

Is it possible, when you connect a camera to the computer, for it to load as a removable device and display an icon of it on the desktop just like when you connect a flash drive and take contents off it that way?

My camera always connects to iPhoto, I never use it, and it's a bit annoying.
