I have a MacBook Pro1,1 running OS X 10.4.11. It is attached to a Dell 24" monitor (the laptop LCD is cracked and not usable). I bought the Mac Box Set some time ago (Leopard 10.5.6, iLife '09 and iWork '09) and have finally gotten around to installing it. When I attempt to install Leopard, I get to the aurora screen but nothing else - no input prompts, nothing. I can't get to any installation prompts with my original Tiger install discs either. I can boot into safe mode but not single user mode. The system seems to function normally after a normal boot. Any help would be appreciated.

Are you booting the machine with the Leopard install DVD? You need to do that in order to upgrade Tiger to Leopard. What kind of install are you selecting? Archive and install? Upgrade? A clean install would be difficult because your LCD is out. However, you could do a clean install (after backing up of course) by using Target Disk Mode if you had another Mac with a firewire port.

Regards.

I'm afraid I don't have another Mac. Every time I try to boot with the Leopard install DVD I get a screen with the aurora image and nothing else - no language selection, no installation options, nothing. I don't see anything unusual in any of the logs, but I'm not a Mac expert. Some other observations that may be useful:
  1. I can boot into safe mode, but it comes up with a bluish wallpaper and I have to hit F7 to get to the login screen
  2. If I boot into verbose mode, I don't see any command details until I select the Shutdown option and the shutdown process begins
  3. If I boot into single-user mode, the screen remains dark as if it didn't boot
